Coco is the 19th feature\u00a0from Pixar Animation studios. And with a back catalogue that contains titles like Toy Story, Monsters Inc, Up and Wall-E the public and press are always expectant of something big. But this time there has been added pressure. 3 of their last 5 films have been sequels, and the last (The good Dinosaur) didn’t do as well in the box office as some may have hope. Do Pixar still tell new stories that resonate like their early behemoths? It’s time for the Coco film review.<\/p>\n

Coco is set in Mexico and follows 12 year old Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez<\/span><\/a>), a young boy who dreams of becoming a musician. The only problem is, his family led by Albuelita forbid all kinds of music. This causes friction in the family which reaches fever pitch on the day of the dead! A sacred Mexican holiday when people remember their family and friends that have passed away. Miguel unfortunately has a fight with his family and ends up in the land of the dead. It\u2019s a great movie that centres around the belief that family is one of the most important things in life. The vocal performances by Miguel (Gonzalez), Hector (Gael Garc\u00eda Bernal<\/span><\/a>) and Hector Ernesto (Benjamin Bratt<\/a>)\u00a0<\/span>are fantastic but even better than that, the musical performances. Miguel (Gonzalez) and Mama Imelda (Alanna Ubach) both taking the movie up a notch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The animation was of course incredible. The clarity, the lighting, the movement, the attention to detail were all perfect. But one of my favourite things about the whole experience were the colours. Family films of this nature are often very colourful but this was someting different, It was really beautiful. The rich vibrant colours that we associate with Mexico were so warm and vivid. Never more so than when Miguel first arrives at the land of the dead.<\/p>\n Definitely another big tick in the Pixar list.
